counterstain

Background coloring agent

A counterstain is a second stain applied to a biological specimen after an initial stain, using a contrasting color to make different structures visible.

In microscopy, the technique highlights cells or tissues that didn't take up the primary stain: The counterstain revealed the cell nuclei in blue against the red-stained cytoplasm.

The verb means to apply such a stain.
