destaining
Extracting excess color
Destaining is the process of removing stain from something that has been stained, particularly in laboratory contexts.
In microscopy and molecular biology, specimens are often overstained, then destained to achieve optimal contrast: After staining the gel, destaining overnight removes background color.
The term applies mainly to technical procedures rather than household stain removal.
