countercultures

Anti-establishment social groups

Countercultures is the plural of counterculture—a movement or community whose values and practices deliberately oppose mainstream society.

The term emerged in the 1960s to describe hippies, antiwar activists, and others rejecting conventional norms: The countercultures of the sixties challenged everything from sexual mores to foreign policy.

Different countercultures may coexist, each pushing back against dominant culture in distinct ways.
