corn gluten

Grain processing byproduct

Corn gluten is a protein-rich byproduct of corn processing, used primarily as a natural lawn fertilizer and pre-emergent weed preventer.

It inhibits root formation in germinating seeds, making it popular for organic lawn care: I spread corn gluten in early spring to keep crabgrass from taking hold.

Also used as a high-protein ingredient in animal feed.
