coopering
Building wooden barrels
Coopering is the craft of making and repairing wooden barrels, casks, and other staved vessels.
The trade requires shaping curved wooden staves and fitting them with metal hoops to create watertight containers.
Though largely displaced by modern materials, coopering persists in wine and whiskey production, where oak barrels impart flavor during aging: He learned coopering from his grandfather, who made barrels for a bourbon distillery.
