deaf pride

Embracing silent identity

Deaf pride is a sense of positive identity centered on being deaf, rejecting the view that deafness is a disability requiring correction.

The concept emerged from Deaf culture, which regards sign language and shared experience as the basis of a distinct community rather than a medical condition: Deaf pride means I don't see my deafness as something to fix.

Often capitalized when referring specifically to cultural Deafness.
