chiselling

Cutting with blade

Chiselling is the act of cutting or shaping with a chisel—a metal tool with a sharpened edge used on wood, stone, or metal.

The word extends to any careful, precise work: He spent months chiselling the details of the sculpture.

In British and informal American usage, chiselling also means cheating or swindling someone out of money: She accused him of chiselling her out of her inheritance.

Also spelled chiseling.
