chequerboards

Gridded game surfaces

Chequerboards is the British spelling of checkerboards—boards divided into alternating squares of two colors, used for playing checkers or chess.

The pattern itself is called a chequerboard pattern, appearing on racing flags, textiles, and floors: The kitchen had chequerboard tiles.
