chequerboard

Alternating colored squares

A chequerboard is a board divided into squares of alternating colours, used for playing draughts (checkers) or chess.

The spelling is British; Americans write checkerboard.

The pattern extends to anything with regular alternating squares: a chequerboard of fields seen from the air, chequerboard tiles.
