charred wood
Fire's dark remnant
Charred wood is wood that has been partially burned, blackened on the surface but not reduced to ash.
The charring process creates a layer of carbon that can actually protect the wood beneath from further decay, insects, and moisture—a technique used in Japanese construction called shou sugi ban.
The cabin's charred wood beams still stood after the fire.
