characterisation

How someone's portrayed

Characterisation is the British spelling of characterization—the way a writer creates and develops characters in a story, or the way someone describes or portrays a person or thing.

A novel might be praised for its rich characterisation, or you might object to someone's characterisation of your actions: That's an unfair characterisation of what happened.
