character witness
Moral standing attestant
A character witness is someone who testifies about another person's reputation, integrity, or moral qualities rather than about specific facts of a case.
In legal proceedings, character witnesses vouch for someone's honesty, reliability, or good standing in the community: His former employer served as a character witness at the trial.
The term extends beyond courtrooms to anyone who speaks on behalf of another's character.
