chamois leather

Car drying skin

Chamois leather is soft, pliable leather originally made from the hide of the chamois, a European mountain goat-antelope.

Now typically made from sheepskin or goatskin, it's prized for cleaning and polishing because it absorbs water without scratching: He buffed the car with a chamois leather.

Often shortened to chamois or, informally, shammy.
