centre-half
Central defensive player
Centre-half is a defensive position in football (soccer), typically stationed in the middle of the back line.
The term is more common in British English and older football terminology, where it originally described a player in the center of a five-man halfback line before tactical formations evolved.
In modern usage, centre-half is largely synonymous with centre-back or central defender.
