caudal vertebrae

Bones in tails

Caudal vertebrae are the bones that form the tail in vertebrate animals.

In humans and other tailless primates, these bones have fused into the coccyx, a small triangular structure at the base of the spine.

In tailed animals, caudal vertebrae range from a few to dozens, depending on species: A dog's wagging tail contains about twenty caudal vertebrae.
