carpenter bee

Tunnels through timber

Carpenter bees are large, robust bees that excavate tunnels in wood to nest, unlike honeybees or bumblebees.

They resemble bumblebees but have shiny, hairless abdomens.

Despite their solitary habits and tendency to bore into wooden structures, they rarely sting and are important pollinators: A carpenter bee has been drilling into our deck.
