carbon-13

Neutron-rich carbon variant

Carbon-13 is a stable isotope of carbon containing six protons and seven neutrons, making it slightly heavier than the more common carbon-12.

It occurs naturally at about 1% of all carbon.

Scientists use carbon-13 in NMR spectroscopy and metabolic studies because it can be tracked without radioactivity: The researchers used carbon-13-labeled glucose to trace metabolic pathways.
