capacity utilization
Output versus potential
Capacity utilization measures how much of a system's potential output is actually being used, expressed as a percentage.
A factory running at 80% capacity utilization produces 80% of what it could at full operation.
Economists track this metric to gauge economic health—high utilization suggests strong demand, while low figures indicate slack: Capacity utilization fell during the recession.
