CPI

Cost-of-living measure

CPI stands for Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation that tracks changes in the prices of goods and services over time.

Economists and policymakers use it to gauge the cost of living and adjust wages, benefits, and tax brackets accordingly: Social Security payments are indexed to CPI.

The CPI basket includes food, housing, transportation, and other typical household expenses.
