grass fire

Meadow in flames

A grass fire is a fire that spreads through dry grass, brush, or other low vegetation.

Unlike forest fires, grass fires burn quickly across open terrain—prairies, savannas, or neglected fields—often outpacing firefighters: The grass fire jumped the highway before crews could contain it.

Also called a brush fire or wildfire depending on the vegetation involved.
