air cell

Tiny breathing chamber

An air cell is a small cavity or pocket containing air.

The term appears in biology for spaces in bird eggs (the pocket at the large end that grows as the egg ages), in honeycomb structures of lungs, and in construction for insulating pockets in materials like concrete blocks or window glazing.

The air cell in an egg enlarges as moisture evaporates through the shell.
