canal networks
Connected water passages
Canal networks are systems of interconnected artificial waterways, typically built for transportation, irrigation, or drainage.
Historic canal networks enabled commerce before railroads: The Erie Canal was part of a network linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic.
The term also describes natural channel systems, as in the canals of Venice or irrigation networks in agricultural regions.
