calling-cards

Formal identity slips

Calling cards are small cards bearing a person's name, traditionally left when visiting someone who wasn't home—a formal social custom now largely obsolete.

The term extends to any distinctive mark or characteristic that identifies someone: Leaving no witnesses was the killer's calling card.

In telecommunications, a calling card is a prepaid card for making phone calls, especially from public phones or when traveling.
