Young maritime servants

Cabin-boys is the plural of cabin-boy, a young male servant on a ship who attends to the officers and passengers.

The role was common in the age of sail, when boys as young as ten might serve aboard merchant or naval vessels: The cabin-boys scrubbed the captain's quarters.

The term now appears mainly in historical fiction and nautical histories.
