A butt hinge is the most common type of door hinge, consisting of two rectangular metal plates (called leaves) joined by a pin.
The leaves are mortised into the edge of the door and the door frame so they butt together when closed, sitting flush with the surfaces.
The carpenter installed three butt hinges on the heavy oak door.
