broad beans

Large flat legumes

Broad beans are large, flat beans that grow in thick pods, eaten as a vegetable.

Also called fava beans, they have a slightly bitter, earthy flavor and tough outer skins that are often removed before eating.

The plants are among the oldest cultivated crops: We shelled broad beans on the porch.

The term is more common in British English; Americans typically say fava beans.
