breveted
Given honorary rank
Breveted is the past tense of brevet, a military term for promoting someone to a higher rank without the corresponding increase in pay or full authority.
Brevet promotions were historically given as honors or to fill temporary needs, especially during wartime.
He was breveted to colonel for his actions at Gettysburg.
The practice was common in 19th-century armies but has largely fallen out of use.
