brevets

Temporary military ranks

Brevets are certificates or warrants, especially military commissions granting rank without the accompanying pay or full authority.

A brevet promotion recognizes service or merit while keeping someone at their substantive rank for administrative purposes.

Outside military contexts, brevet appears in cycling for long-distance endurance rides that must be completed within time limits: She finished the 600-kilometer brevet with an hour to spare.
