brevetted

Given honorary rank

Brevetted means granted a brevet—a military commission giving an officer higher nominal rank without the corresponding pay or full authority.

An officer might be brevetted colonel for distinguished service while remaining a captain in pay grade.

The practice was common in the 19th century, particularly during the American Civil War: He was brevetted major for gallantry at Gettysburg.
