brake dust
Friction pad debris
Brake dust is the fine powder produced when brake pads wear against rotors during braking.
It accumulates on wheels and nearby surfaces, leaving a dark residue that's notoriously difficult to clean: The front wheels were coated in brake dust.
The composition varies—metallic pads produce more visible dust than ceramic ones.
