book index
Alphabetical topic locator
A book index is an alphabetical list at the back of a book directing readers to specific topics, names, or concepts and the pages where they appear.
Unlike a table of contents, which follows the book's structure, an index organizes information by subject for quick reference: Check the index for entries on climate change.
Creating a thorough index—indexing—is a specialized skill, often done by professional indexers rather than authors.
