mirror test
Mark on forehead
The mirror test is an experiment measuring self-awareness in animals and young children.
A mark is placed on the subject's body where only a mirror would reveal it; if the subject uses the reflection to investigate the mark on themselves rather than treating it as another individual, they demonstrate self-recognition.
Chimpanzees, elephants, dolphins, and humans over eighteen months typically pass; most animals do not.
