bog bodies

Preserved marsh remains

Bog bodies are human remains preserved in peat bogs, where acidic, oxygen-poor conditions naturally mummify soft tissue while often dissolving bone.

Most famous examples come from Northern Europe, dating from the Iron Age through medieval times.

Many show signs of ritual killing or execution: The Tollund Man is perhaps the best-known bog body, found with a noose still around his neck.
