body cast
Full immobilization wrap
A body cast is a rigid plaster or fiberglass enclosure immobilizing large portions of the torso and sometimes extending to limbs, used to stabilize severe fractures or spinal injuries during healing.
Unlike smaller casts for individual limbs, a body cast restricts most movement: He spent six weeks in a body cast after the accident.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for anything that severely constrains action.
