red states

GOP electoral territory

Red states are U.S. states that consistently vote Republican in presidential elections, from the color used on electoral maps.

The designation emerged clearly after the 2000 election, when media standardized red for Republicans and blue for Democrats.

Texas and Florida are reliably red states.

The term extends to characterize conservative politics and culture generally: red state values.
