black vulture

Sooty American scavenger

A black vulture is a large scavenging bird found throughout the Americas, from the southeastern United States through South America.

Smaller than turkey vultures, black vultures have dark plumage, grayish-black heads, and short tails.

They feed primarily on carrion and often gather in groups at carcasses or roost sites.

Unlike turkey vultures, black vultures locate food mainly by sight rather than smell.
