bit-shifting

Moving binary digits

Bit-shifting is a computing operation that moves the binary digits of a number left or right by a specified number of positions.

Shifting left multiplies by powers of two; shifting right divides.

Programmers use bit-shifting for efficient arithmetic, data compression, and low-level manipulation: Bit-shifting by three is faster than multiplying by eight.
