bisons
Prairie herd animals
Bisons is the plural of bison, a large, shaggy-haired bovine of North America and Europe.
The American bison, nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century, has since been protected and restored.
While *bison* serves as both singular and plural a herd of bison, *bisons* appears occasionally, especially when emphasizing distinct species or populations: European and American bisons differ in build.
