tipis

Plains pole homes

Tipis is the plural of tipi, the conical tent traditionally used by Indigenous peoples of the North American Plains.

Made of animal hides or canvas stretched over wooden poles, tipis were portable dwellings suited to nomadic life.

The spelling tipi reflects the Lakota word more accurately than tepee, though both are common: The tipis were arranged in a circle at the encampment.
