North American bison
Yellowstone's shaggy giant
The North American bison is a large, shaggy-haired bovine native to the grasslands and prairies of North America.
Once numbering in the tens of millions, bison were hunted nearly to extinction in the 19th century but have since recovered through conservation efforts.
Though commonly called buffalo in American usage, bison are technically distinct from the true buffalo of Africa and Asia.
We saw a herd of bison grazing in Yellowstone.
