birch canoe
Native woodland boat
A birch canoe is a lightweight watercraft made from birch bark stretched over a wooden frame, traditionally built by Indigenous peoples of North America.
The bark's natural waterproofing and flexibility made these canoes ideal for navigating rivers and lakes: They paddled the birch canoe across the still water.
The design influenced modern canoe construction.
