bilging

Taking on water

Bilging is the present participle of bilge, a nautical term.

The bilge is the lowest internal part of a ship's hull where water collects.

To bilge a vessel is to damage it below the waterline, causing it to take on water: The ship was bilged on the reef.

Bilging can also mean swelling outward like a ship's hull, or in slang, talking nonsense—from bilge as rubbish or worthless talk.
