inundate

Flood beyond capacity

To inundate is to flood or overwhelm with quantity.

Water inundates low-lying areas during storms.

More often the word is figurative: We were inundated with applications, The office was inundated with calls.

The sense is always of more than can be comfortably handled—a deluge that threatens to swamp the recipient.
