betelnut
Asian palm seed
The betelnut is the seed of the areca palm, chewed as a mild stimulant throughout South and Southeast Asia.
It's typically wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste and sometimes tobacco.
Chewing produces red saliva and stains the teeth.
The habit is addictive and linked to oral cancer.
Also spelled betel nut; also called areca nut.
