belling
Widening at end
Belling is a raucous mock serenade for newlyweds, typically performed on the wedding night by neighbors banging pots, ringing bells, and making noise outside the couple's window.
The custom, also called a shivaree or charivari, was meant to tease and celebrate—though the couple often had to offer treats or drinks to end the racket.
The term also applies to the bellowing call of a rutting stag: We heard the belling of elk in the distance.
