lynch

Extrajudicial mob killing

To lynch is to kill someone, typically by hanging, through mob action without legal authority.

The practice is most associated with the terrorizing of Black Americans in the post-Civil War South, where white mobs murdered thousands with impunity.

The term now applies to any extrajudicial mob killing: The crowd threatened to lynch the suspected thief.
