rough music

Loud communal mockery

Rough music is a traditional form of public shaming in which a community gathers outside an offender's home to make cacophonous noise—banging pots, blowing horns, shouting insults.

The targets were typically those who violated social norms: wife-beaters, adulterers, or mismatched couples.

The practice, also called charivari or shivaree, has largely disappeared but survives metaphorically for any loud, coordinated public rebuke.
