chivaree
Raucous wedding noise
A chivaree is a noisy mock serenade for newlyweds, traditionally performed on the wedding night with pots, pans, bells, and general racket.
The custom, rooted in rural North American communities, was meant to tease or celebrate the couple—sometimes demanding treats or drinks to make the clamor stop.
The word is also spelled shivaree.
