beerhouse

Public drinking house

A beerhouse is a British establishment licensed to sell beer but not spirits or wine.

The term dates to the 1830 Beerhouse Act, which allowed any householder to sell beer upon payment of a small fee—creating thousands of simple drinking houses distinct from fully licensed public houses.

The word is now largely historical.
