A bedstead is the frame of a bed—the structure that supports the mattress and bedding.
The term distinguishes the furniture itself from what goes on it: an iron bedstead, an antique wooden bedstead.
Though bed often serves the same purpose, bedstead specifically means the frame rather than the sleeping arrangement as a whole.
